Interest rates drop to a record low lev

The decision by the Bank of England to cut UK Bank Rate by half a percentage point, takes the official rate to a new record low of just 1.0%.
As interest rates edge closer towards zero, the use of unconventional monetary policy looms ever larger, but financial commentators including HSBC expect that the Bank Rate will fall further in the coming months. more >
House prices rose in December

House prices rose by 1.9% in January, Halifax said today, putting an end to months of falls and taking many commentators by surprise.
The last time prices increased was in January last year when they rose by just 0.1%. Since then prices have been on a downward slope, falling by more than 1.5% in every month except September, according to figures from the UK's largest lender. more >
